Crash on I-20 westbound in Newton County closes Interstate for hours

COVINGTON — Interstate 20 westbound was closed for several hours Wednesday following a one-vehicle crash in Newton County that injured three people.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the crash occurred around 9:41 a.m. near mile marker 94, approaching the Ga. Highway 142 exit.

"A Toyota Scion … was traveling westbound on I-20, when the driver lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road on the left side," said Tracey Watson of the Georgia Department of Public Safety Information Office. "The driver then crossed two lanes of traffic and struck an embankment on the right shoulder of the road."

A 27-year-old Augusta woman was ejected from the vehicle and airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center. The driver, a 23-year-old Augusta woman, was taken to Clearview Medical Center in Monroe and another passenger was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, both by ground ambulance.
