COVINGTON -- The Newton County School System and the Newton County Board of Education are continuing a search for a permanent principal for Alcovy High School next school year.
NCSS Superintendent Gary Mathews recently reposted the position, after the system accepted applications during part of March.
"In the screening of our first pool of candidates, we were not satisfied with the overall quality, so we have reposted," Mathews said. "At the end of the day so to speak, it is more important that we take our time to select the most qualified candidate and the best fit for AHS."
He said the school board received 13 applications, including one internal one, during the open window for the position.
The application window for the position now will be open until May 8.
Mathews said that is still sufficient time to have the selected candidate start by the first day of the high school principals' contracts or a week or two ahead of a normal schedule.
The posting, which is available on the NCSS website, www.newtoncountyschools.org, lists the minimum qualifications as having an educational leadership certification as required by the Professional Standards Commission, a master's degree or higher and a minimum five years of successful teaching experience and three years administrative experience. The principal is responsible for curriculum, assessment and instruction; data analysis; process improvement; learning and performance development; relationships; performance improvement; operations; and change, according to the job description.
The position was left vacant by former Principal LaQuanda Carpenter, who was principal at Alcovy High School since 2009. She and her husband, Dr. Dennis Carpenter, former deputy superintendent for Operations at NCSS, requested to be released early from their contracts after he accepted a position as superintendent of a school district in Missouri beginning July 1.
The Newton County Board of Education paid them nearly $70,000 as part of a settlement agreement. The system paid them a lump sum of their salaries until May 31, and NCSS is paying their shares of the health insurance premiums until June 30.
Vic Lee, who retired in June as principal of Liberty Middle School, is serving as part-time acting principal of Alcovy High.
