COVINGTON -- The Eastside boys track team left itself in a good position to win the Region 8-AAAA championship, coming in second after the first day at Lanier on Monday.
However, the Longhorns have a large lead with 56 points followed by Eastside with 39. Walnut Grove is in third place with 32.5 points. The Lady Eagles may not be in a position to win region, but they are still getting noticed in fifth place with 19 points.
Earning a trip to the Class AAAA sectionals at Carrollton High School on April 27 for the boys are high jump region champion Derrick Jackson with a jump of 6 feet, 4 inches.
Michael Griffen took second place in the discus with a throw of 121-03 while Jamal Hardge got a second-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 21-08.50 and fourth place in the high jump with a height of 6-02. Also coming in fourth was Bryant Johnson who did it in the shot put with a toss of 42-09.50.
Winning a region championship for the girls was Nylah Chavis with a high jump of 5-04. Coming in third place in the triple jump (34-0.50) was Nylah Chavis.
The region championship will conclude today with the track finals at Lanier.
