CONYERS -- The Rockdale tennis teams enter the region tournament on a roll, thanks to wins in Wednesday's regular season finales.
The girls got a 12-10 victory by No. 2 singles player Ciara Chesser in a third-set tiebreaker to outlast Union Grove 3-2 at the Rockdale Tennis Center. Union Grove's boys had too many matches and had to cancel their visit to Conyers, so crosstown rival Heritage took the Wolverines' place and lost 5-0.
Chesser won the first game 6-4 then dropped the second 6-1 to set up the third-set win. Before that, No. 1 Summer Walker won 6-0, 6-0 and the No. 1 doubles team of Abby Bradford and Destiny Commodore picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win, helping the girls finish the regular season 12-2 with their 12th consecutive match victory.
"It was tight," said Rockdale coach Stephen Sansing. "(The entire match) definitely came down to that tiebreaker, that's the one that gave us the match."
The boys, who finished the regular season 14-4, had no trouble with Heritage. No. 1 Patrick Sanders led the way with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jay Vinson. No. 2 Logan Hull won by forfeit, No. 3 Trey Hull (6-1, 6-2), and the No. 1 doubles team of Collin Shamley and Bruce Mitchell (6-4, 6-4) and No. 2 team of Abenet Addisu and Chris DaSilva (6-2, 6-2) were also winners.
Now Rockdale will try to pull off a program first: winning dual region championships when the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament begins Tuesday at Richard Craig Park in McDonough. Both teams have the top seed and a bye into the semifinals, which also guarantees a spot in the Class AAAAAA state tournament.
"We feel pretty good going into the region tournament," said Sansing. "We got the No. 1 seed, gives us a bye into the semifinals, that was definitely our goal coming into the season. It's not going to be a walk, we're going to have to play our best. We're definitely aiming for that No. 1 seed going into state. We just have to take care of business."
