Newton boys, girls blank Monticello tennis

COVINGTON -- Newton's tennis team is heading into the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament on a high note after the boys and girls teams blanked Monticello 5-0 on Wednesday.

"We have now won two straight (matches) headed into region, so hopefully, we have a little confidence going into next week," Newton head coach Michael Bryan said. "I was especially pleased with the way our boys performed. Our singles players were efficient and made far fewer mistakes than they have in past matches. Hopefully, this trend will continue."

The Newton boys had little trouble against Monticello, winning their matches rather handily. Darin Hollis defeated Tyree Bostic 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Steven Lawson beat Levi Ford by the same score at No. 2 singles.

Courtney Manning had a little easier time beating Jordan Stone 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

The team of Billy Davis and Josue Diaz won their No. 2 doubles match by forfeit, while Craig Thomas and Delique Allen beat Seth Pettis and Jacob Ballew 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Except for No. 2 singles, which went to three sets with Bri Weaver beating Samantha Johnson 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, the other girls matches were won without much trouble. Marie Diaz defeated Kaitlan Needham 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles with Irma Soriano sweeping the singles matches with her 6-1, 6-0 win over Elizabeth Finger at No. 3 singles.

The team of Ja'lynne Cole and Sierra Fleming took care of business with their 6-2, 6-4 win over Brandi McMichael and Christin Jackson at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Ashley Jean-Baptiste and Ify Egbulem shut out Jamyer Sands and Jemiyah Warren 6-0 in the first game while winning the second game 6-3 to keep Monticello winless.

The region tournament will be played Tuesday for the girls and Wednesday for the boys at Richard Craig Park in McDonough.
