Newton authorities seek man in connection with disturbing neighborhood incident

COVINGTON -- The Newton County Sheriff's Office is looking for a 25-year-old man who became hostile to a group of neighbors in the Avery Place subdivision who were enjoying an afternoon of family time.

Warrants have been issued for Demargo Denell Coleman, 25, of 225 Avery Drive, who faces charges of cruelty to children in the second degree, obstruction of police officers, terroristic threats and acts and public indecency.

According to NCSO Public Information Officer Deputy Cortney Morrison, the incident occurred Sunday afternoon around 4:45.

"Dispatchers at 911 were notified that several neighbors were having an issue with a male that lived in the neighborhood who was walking the streets in the subdivision and was on Avery Drive," Morrison said. "The kids were outside playing and the adults were with their kids and he began yelling and cursing at a man and his family."

Morrison said he next turned on another family and screamed, "What are you looking at?"

Morrison said the man was told to go away and to watch his language in front of the kids.

"He then said, 'I don't care about the children and I will cut the children's necks. He then made a vulgar comment to one of the women and exposed himself," Morrison said. "He also threatened to come back to their residence and 'take all their stuff.'"

When deputies arrived, they saw the man standing in the middle of the road in an aggressive manner with his fist clenched.

"Deputies approached him and he began backing up," Morrison said, adding that he began saying he could walk down the street if he wanted to, it was a free country and other comments before he ran into a nearby wooded area.

Deputies searched the area and were unable to locate him. When they interviewed the neighbors involved in the incident, Morrison said their stories were all consistent and one witness gave deputies the man's home address, which was nearby.

A woman at Coleman's home told deputies he ran out the back door when they approached and she had no idea where he went.

He is also wanted out of Fulton County for probation violation.
