Smoke from prescribed burn visible in Newton County

Residual smoke from the prescribed burn taking place in Jasper County on Tuesday and Wednesday has made an appearance in Covington.

"We were really unaffected yesterday because of the wind direction," said Newton County Emergency Management Deputy Director Jody Nolan Wednesday afternoon. "But because the wind is blowing from Jasper County into Newton County we are seeing the smoke today."

Georgia Forestry Commission Chief Ranger Russell Fowler said 1,000 acres of woodlands in the National Forest located in southern Jasper County would be part of a controlled burn conducted by the U.S. Forestry Service.
