Heritage boys extend unbeaten streak to 10 games

MCDONOUGH -- Austin Kulp scored a pair goals, and the Heritage boys soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 8-0-2 with a 2-1 victory over Union Grove in non-region play Monday.

The Class AAAAA No. 8 Patriots, who moved to 11-1-2, last lost March 1 against Clarke Central. Since then, they have outscored 10 opponents 35-10.

"We came out well, (Union Grove) too, and very energized," said Heritage coach Brandon Stewart.

Heritage trailed early 1-0, but Andre Deas set up Kulp for the equalizer with 11 minutes to play in the opening half. With 7:30 to play in the game, Delvin Bickham beat two defenders and his crossing pass found Kulp, who scored the go-ahead goal.

"Second half we made good adjustments and our talent and technical ability pushed (Union Grove) tactically, ran around and through them," Stewart said.

In the first game of the night, the Heritage girls had a long unbeaten streak end as Union Grove outscored the Patriots 4-3 in penalty kicks to win 1-0.

Mady Carter, Kaley Wells and Ray Brown scored for Heritage during penalty kicks, but Union Grove scored four times on Carter in the net.

The loss was the Patriots' first in eight games, snapping a monthlong 5-0-2 streak that began with a win over Habersham Central on March 9.

Heritage was outplayed in the opening half, getting outshot 10-3, then rebounded to get 11 shots on goal in the second half. Heritage took the only three shots in the overtime periods.

"First half was very lackluster, our work rate was pretty poor. (Union Grove) really worked us," said Heritage coach Chad Suddeth. "Second half (Heritage) really played well. Second half we punched the clock and came to work, outshot them 11-7, just couldn't finish."

While Heritage (10-2-2) experienced a rare loss, host Union Grove ended a long winless spell with the shutout victory. The Wildcats hadn't won since March 12, going 0-5-2 in their previous seven games.

"We had our chances," Suddeth said. "Hopefully this experience here (will help) towards the end of the season when the games really matter."

Heritage plays at Parkview on Friday. The girls game, featuring the Class AAAAA No. 8 Patriots and Class AAAAAA No. 2 Parkview, kicks off at 5:30 p.m.
