Rockdale boys win Bonnie Mattox Invitational

MONROE -- The Rockdale boys track and field team won the Bonnie Mattox Invitational at Monroe Area High School last weekend. The Bulldogs, led by a dominant day of relays, won the boys event 117-100 over Dacula.

The 3,200-meter relay team of Malik Dawkins, Zach Hess, Chaz Mapp and Tyree Newton not only won in 8:04.88, but achieved elite national status with its winning time. Rockdale also got wins from the 1,600 relay (3:26.16), distance medley (11:41.07), 800 sprint medley (1:35.05) and 300 shuttle hurdle relay (1:18.02).

Individually, the Bulldogs got a first-place finish from Keijne Thomas in the discus throw (136-07.50), a runner-up finish from Newton in the 1,600 meters (4:42.58) and third-place finishes from Lawrence Crawford in the 100 meters (11.28), Hess in the 1,600 meters (4:49.76) and James Cummings in the triple jump (40-08).

The Rockdale girls also had a big day in the relay events, winning three times to help the team finish second to Dacula. The 1,600 relay (Chloe Brown, Chasin Gladdis, Rachel Hayes and Kyandi Lattimer) won in 4:07.26, the 3,200 relay team of Brown, Lattimer, Elizabeth Lowes and Antwonette Thomas won in 10:50.13, and the 300 shuttle hurdle relay team ran in 1:27.09.

Thomas won the 1,600 meters (5:41.34), while Brown was runner-up (5:51.48). Oneisha Clennon finished second in the discus throw (98-03.50) and Gladdis was third in the 100 meters (12.85).

Alcovy finished third in both the girls and boys meets. The girls had a pair of first-place relay teams as the 800 relay (Alexis Emanuel, Brianna Archer, Bryce Wilis and Laniece Dennis) won in 1:44.29, and the 800 sprint medley (Alexis Bailey, Channa Hoskins, Ayanna Martin and Tieteanna Williams) eclipsed the field in 1:49.67. The Tigers also got a second-place finish from the 3,200 relay (Hoskins, Martin, Williams and Alexis Bailey, 11:17.47) and third-place finishes from the distance medley relay (Miyanna Goodson, Channa Hoskins, Angelina Harper and Morgan Frank, 16:03.24) and 300 shuttle hurdle relay (1:32.53).

The boys were led by Khorvon Nelson, who won the 100 meters (11.04) and joined Josh Echols, Marcus Beasley and Roman Mack on the title-winning 800 relay team (1:30.50). The 1,600 relay (Beasley, Brian Francois, Rontavious Banks and Nelson, 3:26.39) 3200 relay (Jamaul Coles, Chris Taylor, Andy Dorvil and Francois, 8:46.10) and 800 sprint medley relay (Justin Victorian, James Bell, Chris Stewart and Toyous Jefferson, 1:34.81) teams all finished second, while the 400 relay (Jaylin Penny, Echols, Mack and Nelson, 43.30), distance medley (Jeremy Branch, Coles, Dorvil and Emmanuel Surry, 12:19.31) and shuttle hurdle relay (1:20.94) teams picked up third-place finishes.

For the Eastside girls, Nylah Chavis won the high jump (5-00) and finished third in the triple jump (32-01.75).

The Newton quartet of Mercedes Booker, Brianna Hayden, Makayla Jackson and Keri Washington won the 400 relay in 48.69.
