Rockdale snaps long skid

— A long losing streak is over for the Rockdale High School football team. The Bulldogs defense was excellent and the offense scored enough points to knock off Morrow, 9-0 in the Region 2-AAAAAA opener at Reid Stadium.

The win snapped a 13-game losing streak for Rockdale (1-4, 1-0), which won for the first time since August 26, 2011. It was also the first victory in five tries for first-year head coach Venson Elder.

"We finally got that monkey off our back," said Elder. "It feels good, but it's not about me. We got to always make sure we put our kids out there first, make them successful. It's all about getting those victories for them."

Rockdale led 2-0 through much of the game as the defense picked up a safety early. It wasn't until Kentavious Preston scored from 10 yards on a fourth quarter run that Rockdale was able to get some breathing room.

"He carried about three or four guys on his back," Elder said of Preston.

The rest of the game was about the Rockdale defense, which secured the program's first shutout since a 3-0 win over Cedar Shoals in September 2010.

"The defense just played a good game," Elder said. "We still have to tighten up some things, but overall those guys fought for four quarters and that's what we've been waiting to see."

Rockdale will try to stay unbeaten in region play when it travels to Lovejoy next weekend. The Clayton County school, fresh off a 58-3 win over Druid Hills, is 4-1 and averaging more than 36 points per game.

"They're going to be a handful," said Elder.
