Voter registration deadline nears

COVINGTON -- If you want to vote in the General Election but aren't yet registered, you must do so within the next week.

Monday, Oct. 8 is the last day to register to vote in the Nov. 6 General Election.

Residents of Newton County can register between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Board of Elections and Registration Office in the Newton County Administration Building at 1113 Usher Street. Rockdale residents can go to the Board of Elections at 1400 Parker Road, Lobby C, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Those who aren't sure about their registration status can visit the Secretary of State's website at sos.georgia.gov and click on My Voter Page to find out if they are already registered.

To register, you must be a citizen of the United States, a legal resident of Georgia and the city and county in which you wish to vote, and at least 17 to register and 18 to vote. Those serving any sentence due to the conviction of a felony or judicially determined to be mentally incompetent may not register.

Georgia does not register by political party. Citizens who change address must re-register 30 days prior to the election in order to vote. Voter registration applications can be downloaded from the Secretary of State's website and mailed to the appropriate local Board of Elections but must be postmarked 30 days prior to the election.
