COMMERCE -- Gabriel Alvarez had himself quite a weekend in Commerce. The Salem cross country star ran way with the individual title at the Eagle Invitational at East Jackson High School, running in 16:32.57.
Alvarez, a senior, won by nearly 11 seconds, besting Lassiter's Alex Guillaume, who ran in 16:43.51. Alvarez was the only boy's runner to place in the top 100 for the Seminoles, though junior Jordan Marshall finished 34th (23:11.03) to pace the girls.
Rockdale boys place third
NORCROSS -- The Rockdale cross country teams had a number of excellent performances at the Wesleyan Invitational. Though the girls finished last, freshman Antwonette Thomas, an AAU national champion, finished third (20:13).
The boys finished third in the team standings, thanks to three top-20 finishes: Patrick Massie (fifth at 17:12), Clifton Casurra (seventh, 17:29) and Tyree Newton (17th, 17:45).
Heritage boys run well at Gray
GRAY -- At Jones County's Greyhound Invitational, the Heritage boys picked up six top-25 finishes, led by Malik McCrary, who finished seventh at 18:47.
Also placing well for the Patriots were San Marteen Rozier (11th at 18:59), Tharyn Coe (eighth, 19:11.33), Jeremy Milton (14th, 19:12), Zach Whiten (21st, 19:23.53) and Nathan Freeman, who ran in 19:29 to finish 23rd.
