COVINGTON -- A school administrator and a teacher were both injured in an attack by a 16-year-old student at Newton High School Wednesday, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
Newton County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Keith Crum the 16-year-old offender had gotten into a fight with another male student over a girl.
"The female teacher made contact with him and he was upset and pushed the teacher to the ground," Crum said. "An administrator saw what happened and intervened and the student struck him multiple times, including in the nose which caused bleeding."
Following the altercation, the student left the area and the School Resource Officer was notified. The student was soon located and arrested and turned over to Juvenile Court. He was charged with battery on school teacher/personnel, simple battery and battery (a misdemeanor).
In other crime news, Peachtree Academy at 14101 U.S. Highway 278, was burglarized overnight Monday or early Tuesday, according to the Covington Police Department.
Doors were found open to the building, but no forced entry was observed, the CPD incident report states. It appeared the only items taken were 16 computers from the computer lab, as well as computers from the administration office. The cost of the equipment was estimated at $10,350, which did not include damage to wiring which will need to be repaired.
The NCSO reported the arrest of two men, both facing child molestation charges in separate incidents.
Zimani Tarlyn Davis, 40, of 40 Desota Drive was arrested on Sept. 5 and charged with child molestation and sexual battery in connection with ongoing incidents involving a teenage girl.
The girl, who was acquainted with Davis, reported the incidents at school and the NCSO was informed.
"Our investigation yielded enough probable cause to make an arrest," Crum said.
Also, Larry Arthur Kruel Jr., 33, of 235 Dixie Trail was arrested Tuesday on charges of child molestation; aggravated child molestation and cruelty to children.
"Deputies responded to a complaint from a mother who reported her 9-year-old daughter had been molested," Crum said, adding that an investigation ensued which developed enough probable cause to arrest Kruel. The child was known to Kruel and the alleged molestation had been ongoing for a period of time. The molestation was reported on Aug. 31.
George Wesley Owen, 38, of 236 Castle Drive, Conyers, has been arrested and charged with failure to register as a sex offender.
According to Crum, Owen was registered in Newton County, but he moved to Conyers to live with a woman who has a child.
"Probation told him to come back to Newton County and that it was a violation of his probation to live in the house with the child," Crum said. "They found out he was actually still in Conyers and he was arrested."
