COVINGTON -- A young man was carjacked by a man with a handgun after pumping gas at Don's Superette on U.S. Highway 278 Wednesday afternoon, according to the Covington Police Department.
CPD Public Information Officer Capt. Ken Malcom said the perpetrator exited the store around 2:45 p.m. and got into the vehicle with the man who had just finished pumping gas.
"He pulled a gun, demanded money and instructed the person to pull away," Malcom said. "The victim began struggling with the handgun and during the struggle, the truck drove off an embankment between Don's Superette and PiJon Oil."
Following the crash at the bottom of the embankment, the perpetrator ran onto the PiJon Oil lot, jumped the fence and ran down the railroad tracks, Malcom said.
He is described as a black male, with a slender build, in his early 20s, wearing a hat and a red shirt with a green design.
CPD detectives are investigating the incident and are hopeful they will obtain more leads from the surveillance video at the convenience store.
The CPD is asking anyone who may know this suspect or who saw anything that may be related to this incident to call them at 770-786-7605; go to their website at www.covingtonpolice.com; or use the mobile to mobile app called tipsubmit.
