COVINGTON -- An investigation into the Department of Public Safety in Social Circle has been under way for several months and is expected to be concluded around the end of September, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Special Agent Jesse Maddox of the Athens GBI field office said the investigation did not concern any current matters, but had to do with the volunteer firefighters budget and firefighter training records prior to 2010. He said it was requested by Alcovy Judicial Circuit District Attorney Layla Zon, and he expects to forward the GBI's findings to her within a few weeks.
"The city has been extremely cooperative and patient," Maddox said, adding that the completion of the investigation has been hampered by the fact that the Athens field office also has duties regarding crimes of a more urgent or violent nature. "We're trying our best to get it done," he said.
