CONYERS -- It's been a long time since the Rockdale football team has had something to feel good about. After last weekend's 34-7 loss to Heritage in which the Bulldogs were shut out in the second half and gained just 116 total yards, the Bulldogs find themselves on an 11-game losing streak. While the program is going through its longest winless streak since the 1992-93 teams also dropped 11 straight, and has been outscored 64-14 in two games, it's not difficult to find the main reason for the early season struggles.
In eight quarters, Rockdale has 11 turnovers, including five (three interceptions and two fumbles) in last week's 34-7 loss to rival Heritage.
"Turnovers will kill you. We take a step forward and take two steps back," said Bulldogs' first-year coach Venson Elder. "We got to grow up, we just got to keep fighting. We've got to grow from it. Coaches got to take responsibility, can't just blame the kids."
Elder is hoping the growing begins Friday with a road trip to Drew. The fourth-year Clayton County school dropped its season opener last weekend 21-14 to Riverdale. Both teams will be looking for win number one.
"Playing Drew High School, don't know much about them," Elder said. "I do now they have a lot of speed. We got to be ready for anything."
