Golf tourney honoring Crowell taking players

COVINGTON -- Registration is under way for the annual B.C. Crowell Scholarship Golf Tournament, which takes place Sept. 21 at The Oaks Course.

The tournament is sponsored by the Newton County Recreation Commission in honor of the late B.C. Crowell, a longtime member of the commission, with proceeds benefitting the scholarship fund also named in his honor. Two $1,000 scholarships are handed out annually to graduating students from Eastside, Alcovy or Newton high schools.

"These scholarships help defray the cost of tuition and honor B. C. Crowell who was instrumental in establishing youth sports in Newton County," said Kale Curtis, marketing and special events coordinator for the Recreation Commission. "The students can apply through their school counselors or go to our website and print off the application. The applications are due by Feb. 1 of the senior's graduation year."

The golf tournament was started in 1990 when some of Crowell's former players were brainstorming about a way to honor him. Crowell recommended a golf tournament/fundraiser benefitting local students. The foundation started with "zero dollars" said Recreation Commission Director Tommy Hailey and, "right now we've got close to a $50,000 endowment, so this is something that will be here for years to come." A committee evaluates scholarship applications based on set criteria; funds are held and administered through the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta.

The two-man shamble golf tournament is described as like a scramble, with each member of a team teeing off and the best ball of the tee shots selected. All players move their balls to that location and from that point, the hole is played out at stroke play with all members of the team playing their own ball into the hole.

Registration is $150 per two-man team, or $75 per person. Hole sponsorships are available for $100. Mulligans can be purchased for $5, with a limit of two per person and a putting contest costs $5 per putt. The registration deadline is Sept. 14 and registration forms can be obtained online at www.newtonrecreation.com/ registration form.

Forms and checks, made payable to B.C. Crowell Scholarship, can be mailed to Kale Curtis, Newton County Recreation Commission, 6185 Turner Lake Road, Covington, GA 30014. For more information, contact Curtis at 770-786-4373, ext. 17 or email kcurtis@newtonrecreation.com.

Check in at the tournament starts at 9 a.m., with the event beginning at 10 a.m. Lunch is provided.

First and second place gift certificates will be awarded in each flight and determined by number of entries.
