COVINGTON -- For the second consecutive year, the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce is offering the chance to sample the food and wares of local businesses at A Taste of Newton, a food and business expo set for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 13.
The venue has been changed from the previously advertised former Mayfield Hardware store to the third floor of the Newton County Administration Building at 1113 Usher St.
Forty local businesses and restaurants will have booths set up, and many restaurants will be giving away samples of their dishes. Restaurants signed up to participate include RLs Off the Square; Amicis; Bullritos; Mango Tango; Square Perk and others. There will also be several giveaways of business goods and services -- those who visit each booth at the event have a chance to win.
"We really wanted to showcase to residents of Newton County that we have wonderful restaurants here and great businesses," said Chamber Membership Director Lisa Baker. "September is Buy Local Month. We're really trying to emphasize that. Hey, we know you can leave the county but you have plenty here to spend your money with."
Tickets for the event are $25 and can be purchased at the Chamber, located at 2101 Clark Street or by calling 770-786-7510. Sponsors for A Taste of Newton are Alcovy Fitness and Wellness Center and Charter Business.
Last year's event drew about 250 people, Baker said.
