Winder The struggles continued for the Salem football team Friday in Winder. Apalachee snapped a scoreless tie at halftime with two third quarter touchdowns and defeated Salem, 20-0 at W. Clair Harris Stadium.
Salem dropped its fourth consecutive game and fell to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in Region 8-AAAAA. During the losing spell, the Seminoles have been outscored 141-24.
"(Scoreless) at halftime and we just couldn’t really get a whole lot going offensively," said Seminoles coach John Starr. "Playing hard but just not getting a lot done. We feel like if we can just not get in our own way we got a chance to win some ballgames...just focus for entire drives. We just continue to trip on our own feet."
Salem got inside Apalachee's five-yard line in the opening quarter, but came away with no points. The Conyers school also had two other opportunities in Apalachee territory, but one drive stalled and the other ended on a missed field goal.
"Had our opportunity, we just didn’t capitalize on any the opportunities we (had)," Starr said. "We just got to keep on plugging away, we don’t make excuses."
Mired in the longest losing skid since the 2010 team also dropped four straight, Salem hosts Cedar Shoals next week in the final regular season home game.
"We’re just going to keep on fighting," Starr said. "We haven't given up."
