Turnout for early voting tops 8,500 in Newton

COVINGTON -- More than 8,500 citizens have participated in advance voting for the General Election, according to the Newton County Board of Elections Office.

"Turnout for early voting so far is what we expected and even with a line, the wait is only about seven to 10 minutes from the time they walk in the door," said Board of Elections Director Donna Morrison. "I have to brag on the election staff and our part-time staff for the awesome job they are doing to reduce the amount of time it takes for a voter to cast their ballot."

The busiest times for early voting are in the morning and at lunch time, Morrison reported. Early voting will continue from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m. this Saturday at the Newton County Administration Building located at 1113 Usher St. In addition, voters can visit Porter Memorial Library from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 29 through Nov. 2 to vote early. The library is located at 6191 Ga. Highway 212.

"If a person wishes to vote after the early voting period ends on Nov. 2nd they will have to vote on Election Day at their precinct and not at the Election Office. The Election Office is not a voting location for voting purposes on Election Day," Morrison said.

According to the Board of Elections, 1,766 absentee ballots have been mailed and 939 have been mailed back.

Newton has 56,851 active registered voters and 7,794 inactive voters.

Voters can visit the Secretary of State's website at

www.sos.ga.gov/mvp and find out if they are registered, get a sample ballot and find their precinct.

People are not really upset with the President of his leadership or politics. His hue is what upset the southern gentlemen.

The President has handled the Libya situation really well ( I say very sarcastically & ask where is the transparency he promised - looks like a shell game to me), failure to close Gitmo as promised, spearheaded a 2900 page Health Care bill that Nancy Pelosi announced that no one ever really read passed by "buying off" a Senator), our unemployment remains very near 8% (not the 5.4% the Prez promised), has yet to pass a balanced budget - how can he keep the country's checkbook balanced. His approach remind me of a phrase Tennessee Ernie Ford song - "another day older & deeper in debt" (he blames Congress & blames party differnce - a true leader will find away - Clinton, Lincoln & Reagan did, now is now using "foul" language to openly describe his competition & I can go on . So please logically & unemotionally explain his leadership or politics achievements the last 4 years.

For the record, my vote has already cancelled yours and for the record I lived half of my life (which spans almost 7 decades) on each side of the Mason-Dixon line.
