CONYERS -- During the course of a season, sometimes a football team will put together a winning streak, gain some momentum, then run into its bye week at the worst possible time. For Salem High School, last week's open date was right on schedule.
After evening their overall record at 2-2 and their Region 8-AAAAA mark at 1-1 with a win over Winder-Barrow Sept. 21, it's been a weekly struggle for the Seminoles. Facing the best the region has to offer, Salem has stumbled.
It began with Flowery Branch coming to Conyers and using Jackson McDonald's five all-purpose touchdowns to cruise to an easy win. What followed was consecutive blowout losses to Clarke Central (37-0) in Athens and at home to Gainesville (49-6). All of a sudden, what looked to be a promising season has turned into a potential nightmare for the Seminoles.
Here is the good news: Over the final three weeks of the season the Seminoles don't play a team currently with a winning record. That stretch begins Friday when the Conyers school travels to Apalachee. The Wildcats have gone in the opposite direction as their week nine opponent, winning their last two games after a 1-4 start.
Apalachee's defense, which is allowing over 31 points per game, could be the cure for the Salem offense (14.2 points per game, including averaging just eight during the losing streak).
Salem had dropped the first three games in the all-times series before winning in Conyers last season.
