COVINGTON — A woman who was walking along Ga. Highway 81 near Oak Hill Road around 7 a.m. was struck and killed by a vehicle, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
"At this time, no identification has been located on the victim and she had no personal belongings with her. Her age is also not known," said GSP spokesman Gordy Wright around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
He said troopers were on the scene and the Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team was en route to conduct the follow-up investigation.
"What troopers know at this time is that the pedestrian was walking along Ga. 81 when she was hit by the vehicle. The driver stopped a short distance from the scene and called Newton County 911," Wright said.
He also said the exact location of the pedestrian at the time she was struck was not currently known, but would be determined through their investigation.
Highway 81 remains closed at the scene, but according to Newton County Sheriff's Office Lt. Tyrone Oliver it is hopeful it will be open by 11 a.m. In the meantime, traffic is being diverted to Oak Hill Road and Oliver said, "traffic is flowing."
More details are expected later today.
