Pets available for adoption this week in Newton, Rockdale counties

Anybody want a puppy? This 6-week-old Chow-mix is looking for a home. He's been named Bear for obvious reasons and is sweet as honey. He's had his first shots and been wormed and would really like to have a new family. He can be rescued and adopted at Newton County Animal Shelter, located at 210 Lower River Road in Covington. The shelter usually has between 20 to 30 dogs and an equal number of cats eligible for adoption. The adoption fee for a dog or puppy is $25 and $10 for a cat or kitten. Spaying/neutering is mandatory for all animals. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-786-9514. Anyone who has lost a pet is urged to go to the center and bring a photo of the missing animal.

This is one time you'll want to "open Pandora's Box." This little girl has been dubbed Pandora and all you find inside is lots of love. She's a Chihuahua/Miniature Pincher-mix who is looking for a new home. She's between 7 and 8 years old, but still has at least that many good years left as the smaller breeds live long lives. She weighs about 8 pounds and could use some exercise to drop a little weight, but other than that she's healthy as can be. She's up-to-date on all shots, spayed and ready for a new home. She can be rescued and adopted at Rockdale County Animal Care and Control Shelter at 1506 Rockbridge Road in Conyers. At the Rockdale shelter adoption fees for dogs are $30 and $20 for cats. Spaying or neutering is required for adoption. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-278-8403.

Questions to ask before adopting a pet:

-- Can I make a long-term commitment to this pet?

-- Will I be able to spend enough time with a new pet?

-- Am I prepared for the cost a new pet will bring?

-- Which pet is right for my home and my family?
