Snapping Shoals volunteers focus on food drive

Employees of Electric Membership Corporations throughout Georgia, including Snapping Shoals EMC, recently donated their time during the third annual Electric Cooperative Week of Volunteerism.

Held Sept. 29 through Oct. 6, the Week of Volunteerism benefited cities and towns across the state and drew hundreds of employees who participated in projects to bring hunger relief, promote electric safety, encourage student reading and nurture the environment, among other improvement efforts.

The electric cooperatives kicked off the week with a statewide food drive to benefit the Georgia Food Bank Network, which provides food security to low-income and needy children, seniors and working families in Georgia. Donated food goes to either a local food pantry or one of the regional food banks in the state.

Individual projects included a food-sorting day at the Atlanta Community Food Bank's Product Rescue Center, which provides quality non-perishable goods (canned and packaged) to over 700 nonprofit agencies. Volunteers sorted 6,151 pounds of food, which provided 4,100 meals to those in need.
