When a person is discharged from the hospital after surgery or illness, the recovery doesn't end there, said Right at Home Director Mark Ross. Time and effort are required to convalesce in the home setting and following doctor's orders is paramount to getting better.

Unfortunately, too many patients don't eat right, don't take proper medications, don't exercise and don't have the social interaction that is necessary to improve, Ross said.

That's where Right at Home comes in, he said. Right at Home is a non-medical, in-home care company, with 200 offices located throughout the United States. Ross and his wife, Dr. Nicole Ross, who worked at Newton Medical Center and is now employed at Putnam General Hospital, opened a franchise location in Covington, at 2131 Pace St., at the beginning of the year.

"We view ourselves as an extension to what the medical provider is promoting," said Ross, who added that Right at Home helps patients and their families sort through and follow the discharge orders from the hospital.

Right at Home in Covington maintains about 70 caregivers, certified nursing assistants as well as registered nurses.

In addition to working with recovering patients and their families, the company also provides care for seniors and disabled adults who need assistance with daily living skills but don't want to enter a nursing home environment.

"Our goal is to make it simple for families who need support taking care of their loved ones or seniors," Ross said. "It allows them to maintain independent living and dignity."

The company will also work with clients in assisted living or independent communities.

Right at Home services include medication reminders, light housekeeping, bathing and eating assistance, picking up prescriptions, providing transportation to doctor's appointments and hospitals, picking up groceries, meal preparation and planning, post surgery/rehab care, ambulation assistance, laundry and in-hospital sitter services.

Ross said he and his wife, who live in Covington with their three school-age children, are pleased to be able to provide a worthwhile service to the community.

"Dr. Ross and I have a passion for helping these families and I look forward every day in making an impact in their lives," said Ross.
