Conyers Venson Elder has got his biggest win as Rockdale football coach. Kentavius Preston scored from four yards out to get Rockdale within one point, and Preston scored again on the two-point conversion as the Bulldogs nipped Luella, 21-20 Friday at Reid Stadium.
Rockdale, which has struggled at times under Elder, improved to 2-5 overall, but 2-1 in its first season in Region 2-AAAAAA.
"We had no choice," Elder said of going for the win instead of settling for the extra point and the tie. "I used one of my time outs and talked it over with the coaches. It was a no-brainer, we were going for two."
Rockdale looked to be headed for a loss before a key fourth down play set up the touchdown. Quarterback Zuri Minifield found Tarjee Steele for a 40-yard hook up to the Luella four-yard line. Preston scored on the next play.
"(Preston) got hit and bounced off a couple tackles and got in the end zone. He was just determined not to be stopped," Elder said. "It was a great day for this program. In the past we probably would’ve put our heads down and pack it in. Tonight they decided they wanted to fight."
