Folk art festival features talent from across the state

If it hadn't been for an online career quiz and being unemployed, Sam Granger may never have ventured into the world of art. While he was searching for a job on the Internet, a pop-up window came up requesting he answer some questions about what type of career would fit him best.

When the results of the quiz indicated he should become an artist, Granger bought some painting supplies and got to work.

"As a joke, I started painting some stuff and people started buying it," said Granger, who lives in Concord.

Five years later, his experiment with art has transformed into a full-time job. Though demand is "up and down," Granger said, he's sold some 800 pieces at shows, on consignment and now mostly to dealers.

Granger will be one of about dozen artists featured at the Art Fandango Folk Festival on Oct. 20 at the The Hen House 'Tiques and Uniques, located at 1026 South Main St. in Olde Town Conyers.

"We decided, since we love folk art down here, we'd throw a little festival," said Beverly Crutchfield, Hen House owner. "I was so lucky to get Sam for our show. He's very popular."

Granger's style is primitive and he paints on whatever materials he can find, such as plywood or tin. Some common themes occurring in his works include music, religion and politics.

"I like to paint what I want, when I want based on the mood I'm in, how I feel and whatever the material I'm working on wants to be," said Granger, on his website, at www.samgfolkart.com.

Crutchfield said other works at the festival will include art on butane gas cans, pottery and metal work. The festival will also feature food such as barbecue, Brunswick stew, grilled turkey legs and boiled peanuts.
