Heritage softball moves on to round of 16

— The Heritage softball team is moving on. Kierra Camp tossed a pair of shut outs and the Patriots’ offense exploded in a sweep of North Paulding, 8-0 and 13-0 in the first round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs.

Heritage (30-3) will travel to Cobb County to play Region 7-AAAAA champion Pope and ace pitcher Kelly Barnhill in next week’s round of 16.

“We’ve got a week to prepare for it (and) we’re going to have our work cut out. We haven’t really faced anybody with (Barnhill’s kind) of velocity,” said Heritage coach Jason McBay. “Our girls play like they played tonight I feel good about anybody we play.”

McBay’s bunch had no trouble in Wednesday’s sweep. While Camp allowed just two hits and struck out eight in the opener, the Patriots erupted for five runs in the first, with a pair coming on Carri Wilkerson’s two-run double. Camp was even better in the nightcap, tossing a four-inning no-hitter and allowing just one base-runner.

Camp also contributed a run-scoring single in the first and in a seven-run second, she tripled in a run, which along with Cierra Davenport’s two-run home run helped Heritage build an 8-0 lead. Heidi Shepherd also had a big game, driving in three runs, including an RBI-single to cap the scoring in the third.

“Every single girl did their job tonight. I could list all 14 (players),” McBay said.
