Pets available for adoption this week in Newton, Rockdale counties

Bentley may be the cutest thing on four feet. Just a pup, this black and white terrier appears to be wearing socks. He is believed to be between 12 and 14 weeks old. He was found running loose as was brought to the shelter. He's up-to-date on his shots and likes his chow. He'll probably weigh a maximum of 30 pounds as an adult. He'd make a great addition to any family. He can be rescued and adopted at Rockdale County Animal Care and Control Shelter at 1506 Rockbridge Road in Conyers. At the Rockdale shelter adoption fees for dogs are $30 and $20 for cats. Spaying or neutering is required for adoption. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-278-8403.

This week's adorable canine looks for all the world like a Chinese skunk. Named Spice, this gorgeous Pekingnese, is a purebred guy who is set to charm and brings with him all the nobility found in this ancient breed. At 2-plus years, he's a good choice for seniors or families with older children, and he appears to get along well with other dogs. He's up-to-date on shots and worming. He can be rescued and adopted at Newton County Animal Shelter, located at 210 Lower River Road in Covington. The shelter usually has between 20 to 30 dogs and an equal number of cats eligible for adoption. The adoption fee for a dog or puppy is $25 and $10 for a cat or kitten. Spaying/neutering is mandatory for all animals. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-786-9514. Anyone who has lost a pet is urged to go to the center and bring a photo of the missing animal.

Questions to ask before adopting a pet:

-- Can I make a long-term commitment to this pet?

-- Will I be able to spend enough time with a new pet?

-- Am I prepared for the cost a new pet will bring?

-- Which pet is right for my home and my family?
