Meadors' attorney asks for documents from school board

COVINGTON -- The attorney for school board Vice Chair Jeff Meadors has filed a request for documents from the Newton County Board of Education.

Last week, attorney Jeff Foster filed a third party request in Newton County Superior Court for the production of documents from the BOE, requested from school board attorney Kent Campbell and Newton County School System Superintendent Gary Mathews.

The request was filed in the civil defamation suit LaQuanda Carpenter vs. Meadors before word came from Carpenter's attorney Stephanie Lindsey that it was her intention to drop the lawsuit.

In the suit, Carpenter, who is principal of Alcovy High School, claims that Meadors was slanderous and malicious in making false statements about her profession to expose her to public hatred, contempt or ridicule on the Newton Citizen website or gave information to individuals to post comments for him.

The request asks for:

-- 1. All written policies in effect and any proposed amendments, involving the employ of persons related by blood or marriage to other employees since Jan. 1, 2008.

-- All written policies in effect and any proposed amendments, involving employees having supervisory roles of other employees to whom they are related since Jan. 1, 2008.

-- All written policies in effect and any proposed amendments, regarding accounts and auditing of student activity fees or other funds paid or raised by students for clubs, school trips or other extracurricular activities since Jan. 1 2008.

-- All receipts, reports, audits, invoices or other documents detailing the receipt or disbursement of money for student activity fees or other funds paid or raised by students for clubs, school trips, or other extracurricular activities from Jan. 1, 2009 to the present at Alcovy High School.

-- Any documents detailing or describing the job description and duties of Dr. Dennis Carpenter since his employment by the Newton County Board of Education, including any amendments or alternates thereto.

-- Any and all documents related to allegations and the subsequent investigation of alleged financial irregularities or mismanagement of student activity fees or other funds paid or raised by students for clubs, school trips or other extracurricular activities at Alcovy High School since Jan. 1, 2009.

-- Any and all documents related to allegations and subsequent investigation of alleged purchase and consumption of alcohol on a school-sanctioned trip since Jan. 1, 2009.

-- All written policies in effect and any proposed amendments regarding purchase and consumption of alcohol on a school-sanctioned or official school trip since Jan. 1, 2009.

-- Any and all documents detailing the department head or supervisor that reports to the Superintendent regarding the transportation, personnel, operations or facilities, physical plant, maintenance and repair departments or operations within NCSS for individual school budgets and the accounting for student activity fees or other funds paid or raised by students for clubs, school trips or other extracurricular activities.

-- Any and all documents detailing graduation rates, SAT performance, ACT performance, End-of-Course-Testing performance, graduation test performance or other system-wide or nationally-administered standardized test and performance for NCSS high schools from Jan. 1, 2008 to present.

-- Employee personnel file for plaintiff Carpenter.

-- Employee personnel file for Dr. Dennis Carpenter, the plaintiff's husband who also is the deputy superintendent of Operations at NCSS.

I think someone has a real lawyer! This is going to be good.

Carpenter has dismissed the suit against Meadors. Now it is time to get back to teaching children and working toward an efficient school system.

What an interesting turn of events. I mean this lawyer has got to have some sense unlike some other people. Let'em have it Foster.

Laquanda sent an email to the faculty at Alcovy today saying she is dropping the suit. She claims it is for the betterment of the community, that she doesn't want to be divisive. Does anyone really believe that? That is a move by a person who knows she has no case and that the wolves are circling.

OnToday, not to doubt your word, but considering the people involved, I'll believe it when I see it...

Imagine that. It gets. Hot and they drop the suit.

If you have been in this county long enough you know anyone else in the Newton County School System that behaved as unethically as the Carpenter's they have would have been ousted immediately!

There are 2 sides to every story. I glad that the Newton Citizen printed both sides. Thru this mess they have looked at both sides and report facts from both sides. The other paper started down the path at looking at both sides but has loss there way. They ended up part of the story not reporting on the story. Great job to Michelle and the others at the Citizen.

To gsm 7476: Is someone writing for Dr. Matthews here?(gsm?Just saying! There are 2 sides to every story! Whoever is in CHARGE of the Newton County School System should have nipped this in the bud before it escalated to the point where any of this had to even be printed in any newspaper! Unethical behavior from Administrators and Newton County Board of Education employees should have been addressed immediately!

No I am not that person aka “Gary” If you look back I have been here a couple of months and that I think in my opinion the lack leadership of the that person is about 33% of the problems at NCSS. My comments were about the coverage and the Citizen has done a great job. The other paper did not. The GSM stands for Great Smokey Mountains were my cabin is. 7476 stands for July 4th 1776 Freedom Day. But thanks for your comments

If you send your children to public schools, esp after this needless episode, you deserve what you get. For those of you who can't do that because of lack of finances, I would not cease praying day and night for you children's success and protecion while they are attending AHS. Believe me, you need all the miracles you can get while your child is involved with that school...

Good point Billy, i don't have the finances for private school but i do it anyway just so my son can get an education! Not to mention all the horror stories that i hear from all of his friends that attend Alcovy it makes paying the money a lil better!

All that he was asking for was documentation that would have shown that anything he said was true- the best defense to slander and libel is to show that what was said or written was the truth. Now, the lawsuit has been dropped because they could see that they would lose. The problem now is turning the attention from the sensationalism and back to the students.

Meadors and others showed up for their depositions yet Lindsey and her clients won't do the same. So the best defense is the truth and the truth is in these documents. It will be interesting to see if NCSS attorneys stall and drag their feet because looking at this list, there is likely some explosive material in there. I can see NCSS refusing access to these documents, which will just raise more ire at the Attorney General's office.

It's also disgusting how Lindsey orchestrated all of this to play out in the public and the media. It is no coincidence that The Cov News ran their one-sided stories on Sunday, and then Carpenter drops the suit after everyone has had time to read about how everyone wants to "move on." Clearly they were looking for a way out of this and they found it by using the media. I'm glad The Newton Citizen didn't take the bait. It's also no coincidence that this happened right before the BOE meeting last night. A clever little ply Ms. Lindsey, but not clever enough. When Meadors' attorney gets his hands on these documents (or should I say IF) then we will see what is really going on. She says in the letter that there should be transparency and accountability. OK, then let's see it all and hold those accountable. I think people will be surprised to see what hubby has been up to as well.

I was looking at the categories for these documentation requests and that is a big net they are dragging. I wonder if they will stop now that the lawsuit is dropped or will they go ahead and start digging through this info? There is bound to be dirt in there. Meadors spoke of a "system flushing" a while back. this might be a good vehicle. Also, I wish the school system could respond to all lawsuits from crappy parents like this. If the system lawyer/s approached every potential lawsuit like this, we would not have any issues from parents.

Sue the pants off LaQuanda if she welcomes investigation then Foster must continue.

1

MsLoy 2 years ago

We want to see the documents Foster asks for if alcohol or money are truly issues at Alcovy High and she welcomes investigation then turn them over.

Tairuna 2 years ago

The focus needs to be back on the kids definatly. I 100% agree. I do think documentation on all that he has requested is a great thing. I just don't see these teachers all just coming together and saying this about LC if it wasn't true. I can see why they haven't come forward though cause of what they know. I can understand.

What's really going on? I want to know the real intention behind this?

Good luck on that meadors let your lawyer try and get that.

Most of it is public record so unless the NCSS lawyers stall or stonewall it should be fairly easy. SHOULD be. Besides, The Cov News dug up personnel info on Meadors for their smear piece so it works both ways.

GA has an OPEN RECORDS LAW any Gov., Body MUST Provide copies of any document. The only exception is SS#, medical records, Bank account #.and Documents that are used in any criminal investigation once the DA office has closed the case the document are subject to open records. That includes text messages cell phone records any record communications video or audio computer hard drives as well as other documents. If you send an email to a Gov. Email address it is an open record same if you sent it from a Gov. Computer or email account. there is a fee for the copies I did one for 30 pages earlier in the year it was $3.25 and they have 3 day to do it or they face fines.

I have been out of town so just catching up Jeff Foster is one of the best attorneys around that is been made clear by the dismissal on the heels of the request for documents on LaQuanda Carpenter and money mismanagement and alcohol on school "sanctioned" (love that wording) trips. Foster never sat down with papers and trashed talked the plaintiff that is all they had on the other side trash talk and smears and they convinced a paper we know that they were right so if the Covington News is really objective then dig deeper into the Bibb County past, dig deeper into some of the stuff Foster is looking for or do an interview with him and get hold of some files no matter what you have to pay him the taxpayers of Newton County deserve to know did LaQuanda Carpenter since 2009 mismanage club money or any money the Superintendent issued a statement himself saying as much so what details are there and has the NCSO been alerted and if proxy violations took place and LaQuanda did not investigate the proxy leaks but threw people in a suit was it to cover up the failure to investigate that? And is LaQuanda Carpenter per her letter welcomes us to look at this then the Covington news has a duty to do the truth here n ot some Hollywood journalism that no one cares enough abotu to even comment on. IF we electe people like the board member all across the county then the corruption will clean upu we need people willing to take bullets to clean up the schools for the kids not weak people why by the gossip like the covington news did and like Eddie did he is a reitred buse driver after all. And if she is innocent then that is great but she began this whole thing and she says in her own words she welcomes it which I find odd that you drop the suit but I will tell you the whole way through I waas told that Kent Campbell has no use for the Carpenter attorney.
