Bond denied for boyfriend charged in murder

COVINGTON -- A Newton County judge denied bond for a 25-year-old man who faces a murder charge following the death of his girlfriend's 7-year-old son.

Last week, David Joe Mann Jr., of 20 Paden St., requested bond at a hearing with public defender Anthony Carter. Judge Eugene Benton denied the request.

Mann is charged with felony murder, aggravated battery and cruelty to children in the death of Ethan Israel Martinez, who died in September at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston due to blunt force trauma to the head.

Newton County EMS was called to his home on Sept. 18, when Martinez was found to be unresponsive. He was transported to Egleston via ambulance with life-threatening injuries.

Mann was arrested Sept. 20 following an investigation by the Newton County Sheriff's Office and has been in jail since that time.

Mann and the mother of the victim are the parents of a 6-month-old child. The couple lives in a subdivision off Ga. Highway 81 South and have lived together for about two years.

Martinez was a student at Livingston Elementary School.

The family did not have burial insurance, so a fund has been set up for monetary assistance. Donations may be made at Chase Bank to the account of Jesus E. Martinez.
