Annual Relay pageant set for Oct. 21

COVINGTON - The Miss Sweetheart Relay 2013 Pageant is accepting applications for contestants. The pageant takes place at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21, at Eastside High School, located at 10245 Eagle Drive in Covington. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Newton County.

"I do pageants and I've held many national titles and I said if I ever did a pageant it would benefit something. Since I'm a cancer survivor myself, I picked Relay as a benefit," said Pageant Director Beth Bradley.

Miss Sweetheart Relay is a natural look pageant encouraging age appropriate hair and make-up. Contestants are judged in gown only and gowns are required to be age appropriate. The pageant features nine categories for girls age birth to 24. Winners will participate in Relay for Life, the annual community Christmas parade and other events throughout the year.

The entry fee is $60. Applications and more information can be obtained by calling 770-377-9244 or emailing bbtaz@mindspring.com.

Now in its eighth year, the pageant has become a staple event each fall in Newton County, and last year raised more than $1,900 for Relay.

Contestants are asked to solicit donations and sell ads for the pageant's program to benefit Relay. The contestant who raises the most money will be honored with the Miss Spirit Relay title. Entry fees also go to benefit Relay. In addition, a photographer will donate a portion of the proceeds from picture packages ordered.

The general public is invited to attend the pageant. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students, with children age 5 and under admitted free.
