Pets available for adoption this week at Rockdale, Newton shelters

This pensive little guy is named Merlin and he is very serious about finding a new home. The noise and clamor at the shelter makes him nervous, but he'd fit right in a household with older children or adults only. He's a handsome Dachsund with an unusual merle coat and weighs only 12 pounds. He is believed to be about 4 years old. Merlin can be rescued and adopted at Newton County Animal Shelter, located at 210 Lower River Road in Covington. The shelter usually has between 20 to 30 dogs and an equal number of cats eligible for adoption. The adoption fee for a dog or puppy is $25 and $10 for a cat or kitten. Spaying/neutering is mandatory for all animals. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-786-9514. Anyone who has lost a pet is urged to go to the center and bring a photo of the missing animal. - Staff photos by Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith

If you like your cats to be just plain cats, here's a chance to adopt a robust domestic short hair. The healthy litter includes two gray and black males and one female who have been named Scout, Bailey and Sasha. They're 7 weeks old and are up-to-date on shots and deworming. One or all can be rescued and adopted at Rockdale County Animal Care and Control Shelter at 1506 Rockbridge Road in Conyers. At the Rockdale shelter adoption fees for dogs are $30 and $20 for cats. Spaying or neutering is required for adoption. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-278-8403.

Questions to ask before adopting a pet:

-- Can I make a long-term commitment to this pet?

-- Will I be able to spend enough time with a new pet?

-- Am I prepared for the cost a new pet will bring?

-- Which pet is right for my home and my family?
