The Covington Police Department has released this photo of a suspect in a reported armed robbery that was really a drug deal gone bad. There is an outstanding warrant for the arrest of Dexter Jones Jr., 26, 3119 Bohannon St., Covington. Jones is wanted for sale of marijuana.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Jones or comes into contact with him is asked to call 911.

According to the CPD, Jones is dangerous and should not be approached.

It was initially reported that on Sept. 12, Cornelius Hudson, 19, of 135 Claremont Drive, Covington, was carjacked by a man with a handgun after pumping gas at the Don's Superette service station on U.S. Highway 278.

Investigators have determined that Hudson was actually there to sell 4 ounces of marijuana to Jemarcus Kemp, 24, of 4106 Cannon St., Covington, according to a press release issued by the CPD. The deal was brokered by a third individual, Jones, during a three-way call between the men, according to the CPD.

"Kemp, instead of purchasing the marijuana, pulled a firearm on Hudson and demanded the marijuana. A physical altercation between Kemp and Hudson ensued inside the vehicle being driven by Hudson," according to Capt. Ken Malcom, public information officer with the CPD. "Hudson wrecked the vehicle and Kemp fled the scene with the firearm."

Witnesses dialed 911 reporting Kemp running from the scene with a weapon. Det. Brent Fuesting located a cell phone that belonged to Hudson at the scene and pulled together phone records and text messages leading to Jones and Kemp.

After an interview, "it was determined the act was a failed drug deal and not armed robbery of an innocent patron as first reported," according to Malcom.

A search of the area and review of the camera system did not yield the firearm or marijuana. A search warrant on Hudson's vehicle turned up the marijuana.

Hudson has been charged with sale of marijuana and making false statements. Kemp is charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, attempt or conspiracy to commit offense of Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act.
