COVINGTON - The dog days of summer are over, but in Covington, it's fall when dogs are in the spotlight.
The annual Mutt Show takes place in downtown Covington Saturday, with registration at 9 a.m. and judging to begin at 10 a.m. Dogs of all ages, breeds and sizes are eligible to participate in the competition.
Sponsored by the Humane Society of Newton County and Newton County Animal Control, the popular, somewhat tongue-in-cheek dog show will honor pets in several categories this year: Most Beautiful; Most Handsome; Best Dressed; Best Trick; and A Face Only a Mother Could Love.
Participation is free, but a donation to the Humane Society is appreciated.
"Please come. Everybody is welcome," said Humane Society Chair Betty Bellairs. "It's fun. We give ribbons in each category for first, second and third prize and we're giving door prizes this year."
Dogs should be under control of the owner at all times and must be at least 6 months old to participate and have proof of rabies vaccination.
Following the Mutt Show, at 1 p.m. Dr. Douglas Gilreath, senior pastor of Covington First United Methodist Church and Rev. Jan McCoy, associate pastor, will hold a "Blessing of the Animals Service" on the front steps of the church at 1113 Conyers Street. All animals were welcome -- dogs, cats, fish, hamsters, rabbits, turtles and more. All animals have to be properly leashed or caged in order to maintain their safety.
