Pedestrian struck and killed in predawn hours Thursday

COVINGTON — A man known to live in the Conyers/Covington area was fatally injured on Ga. Highway 36 before dawn Thursday as he walked along the roadway, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The crash occurred south of Newton Factory Bridge Road.

The victim has been identified as Thomas James Daugherty, 37. His immediate family lives in New York state and was notified Thursday afternoon.

GSP troopers determined Daugherty was struck by a Hyundai Santa Fe that was being driven by a 62-year-old Newton County woman.

"(She) reported a collision to Newton County around 6:15 a.m. of what she believed to have been a collision with a deer," said GSP spokesman Gordy Wright. "She had stopped about a tenth of a mile from where the body was later located."

Wright said the victim's vehicle was been located on the shoulder of Ga. Highway 36, north of the crash location.

"It is believed the victim's vehicle had a mechanical breakdown," he said.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors in the crash.

The GSP's Specialized Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash and whether or not charges will be made against the driver are pending the outcome of their investigation.

I was on my way to take my two young daughters to school this morning when I saw this man on the side of the road, I pulled over & called 911. An other wonderful woman stopped to help. I just want to say that I am praying for this man, for his family. This is such a horrible thing.....I wish I could have done more, I wish I could have found him alive & helped...
