LOCUST GROVE — Rockdale’s Antwontee Thomas’ second-place finish in the Region 2-AAAAAA cross country championship on Saturday at Luella gave the Bulldogs the runner-up team competition with 52 points while sending them to the state meet for the first time since 2003 and the first time in school history that both boys and girls squads made it together.
Druid Hills won the team championship with 23 points while Newton finished third with 58 points.
The other four region teams, Alcovy, Luella, Morrow and Lovejoy, did not have the necessary five runners to compete in the team competition.
Luella’s Jojo Heckman was the individual low medalist, 30-runner event with a time of 21 minutes, 12 seconds with Thomas coming in second in 21:51.
Helping Rockdale take the team runner-up spot with Thomas were Kyia Havens (16 — 25:42), Kimola McCallum (18 — 26:04), Maria Campos (22 — 18:41) and Deja Lewis (25 — 30:33).
Running for Newton were Maiya Newton (7 — 23:25), Genevieve Antoine (13 — 24:34), Haliee Willis (23 — 29:19), Gizelle Ferguson (24 — 29:51) and Ana Pastrana (27 — 31:16).
Alcovy’s two runners were Elizabeth Smith (5 — 22:51) and Brianna Archer (30 — 45:36).
