LOCUST GROVE -- Alex Grady's repeat as region champion helped the Newton boys take the runner-up spot in the Region 2-AAAAAA cross country meet on Saturday at Luella High School.
In the boys meet, Druid Hills won the team competition with 30 points followed by Newton (38), Rockdale (53), Morrow (123), Luella (132) and Lovejoy (166).
Grady, who was recently named a top-20 finalist in Georgia's Wendy High School Heisman award program for scholar-athletes, won the individual top spot beating the field with a time of 16 minutes, 31 seconds followed by Daniel Samuel of Druid Hills who came in second with a time of 16:58.
Making the all-region team for the boys are, from Newton, Christian Scott (5 -- 17:23), Shemar Rannie (8 -- 17:52), Sean McDuffie (11 -- 18:05) Kameron Wallace (13 -- 18:12) and Grady. Making the team for Rockdale are Patrick Massie (4 -- 17:15), Tyree Newton (7 -- 17:48), Alex Mann (12 -- 18:05), Clifton Casura (14 -- 18:19) and Logan Hull (16 -- 18:45).
This is the 10th straight year that Newton will be represented in the state cross country meet in Carrollton on Saturday while both Rockdale squads will be in the state meet for the first time in their 58-year history.
