Citizen Advertising Director Brenda Bennett presents a check for $569 to Benny Atkins, founder of the Kimberley Chance Atkins Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to breast cancer education and awareness.
The Citizen newspapers recently made donations to breast cancer awareness organizations in both Rockdale and Newton counties. The newspaper contributed 5 percent of print proceeds from advertisements placed in its Read Pink edition published Oct. 7. The Read Pink issue highlighted breast cancer survivors and the importance of mammograms in detecting the disease.
The Kimberley Chance Atkins Foundation accepted a $569 donation from the Citizen. The Rockdale-based nonprofit is dedicated to education, prevention, early detection and treatment support regarding breast cancer.
The Foundation raised $90,000 over several years to purchase computer aided detection and digital mammography equipment for the Women's Center at Rockdale Medical Center. The foundation's current focus is providing free mammograms to uninsured and underinsured women in the area. The Citizen donation will cover mammograms for five women.
The Newton County Medical Center Auxiliary also accepted a $569 donation from the Citizen, on behalf of the Hope Boutique at NMC. Located in the NMC Women's Diagnostic Center, the boutique provides free scarves, hats, wigs, turbans, blankets, bras, prosthetic breasts, drain bags and pillows, make-up and educational material to breast cancer patients who have little or no health insurance.
