PORTERDALE -- If you want to enjoy an evening of jazz while helping out a good cause, you might consider attending the Jazz By the River Concert on Friday, June 8.

The event is a fundraiser for the Washington Street Community Center, a non-profit that has a variety of programs for local students, including an after school tutorial program.

This year's fundraiser will take place outside the Porterdale Mill Lofts by the Yellow River, at 1109 Main St., Porterdale from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission begins at 6 p.m.

This year's headliner is Neo4, a jazz band headed by Newton native Chand Bennett that has been making the rounds at venues in Atlanta for the past five years.

"We don't focus just on jazz ... We really play all genres. We touch every single genre with this show: R&B, rock, Top 40, country. We put our own flavor to it so it sounds like jazz. We're playing the The Beatles and The Doobie Brothers. We really cover the gamut," Bennett said.

Neo4 will be joined by several solo artists, including trumpet player Anthony Bailey, another Atlanta area favorite, local 13-year-old bass player Malik Compton and vocalist Ajaray Embry, whose voice can be compared to Erykah Badu and Chaka Khan.

Saxophonist Bennett is a former student of local educator and bandleader T.K. Adams. "He taught me how to play my first note. I owe my love of music to him," Bennett said. Adams' wife Louise is the founder of the Washington Street Community Center After School Tutorial Program and the couple asked him to perform this year's fundraiser.

Bennett has shared the stage with the likes of James Brown, Toni Braxton, Maceo Parker and Vesta Williams. He currently lives in Lithonia and teaches private music lessons. His band performs at public and private events throughout the metro area.
