SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. -- Georgia College's season finally came to a close with the Bobcats losing 3-2 in match play against CSU-Stanislaus in the NCAA quarterfinals on Thursday at the par-72, 7,092-yard Cardinal Club Golf Course.
Former Eastside golfer Taylor Smith, a junior who was named Bobcat Athlete of the Week for his efforts in the NCAA Regional Championship where he carded a 5-under par 211, had a good tournament with a pair of par round and a 1-under par 71 in the third round to finish the tournament tied for 15th place.
The Bobcats finished in the top eight in the first earning a spot in the quarterfinals. Georgia College collected wins from Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw) and Ryan Trocchio (Norcross) in the loss to CSU-Stanislaus.
Trocchio out-did CSU-S's top player in Trevor Blair 71-74. Garrett did Trocchio one better with a 71-75 victory over Chris McCracken.
The Bobcats had a phenomenal 2011-12 campaign, winning an NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional Championship without the benefit of a single senior. The region title was just the second in school history, and the Bobcats put three on the All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) teams in Garrett, Trocchio and Smith. Trocchio added PBC Freshman of the Year honors as well.
The No. 18 ranked Georgia College golf team has advanced to quarterfinal action at the 2012 NCAA Division II Championships, taking fifth in stroke play.
The Bobcats shot their best round of the stroke-play tournament on the final day shooting a 3-under par 285. The Bobcats finished 2-under par for the three-rounds after carding a 289 and 288 on the first two days.
