COVINGTON -- The Newton County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia State Patrol report that six buses carrying Burke County Schools students have collided on Interstate 20 westbound just past Exit 97 at Ga. Highway 11. Approximately 42 students have been treated for minor injuries at area hospitals and one driver was airlifted with non-life-threatening injuries, according to NCSO spokesman Lt. Tyrone Oliver.
Oliver said GSP troopers are investigating the accident which appeared to be a chain reaction of rear-end collisions. All the buses were following each other and were apparently en route to Six Flags Over Georgia west of Atlanta.
More than 100 students were involved in the crash and those who were not injured have been transported to Eastside High School for shelter, food and water, Oliver said, adding that Newton County's Emergency Management Agency is assisting with logistics.
The crash occurred around 11 a.m. in the area where construction is being conducted along the interstate, but Oliver said the construction zone is clearly marked and it is unknown whether or not the construction was a contributing factor.
