Though Georgia Tech blew a four-run lead and lost a heartbreaker to Miami on Thursday, Buck Farmer delivered another strong start. The former Rockdale standout tossed six innings of two-hit ball and allowed just one earned run in his 14th start of the season.
Farmer, a junior, threw three shutout innings before an 85-minute lightning delay at Russ Chandler Stadium. After the game continued, Farmer pitched a perfect fourth, and in his final inning allowed a solo home run to Rony Rodriguez.
The Yellow Jackets bullpen couldn't hold the 4-1 lead. Stephen Perez hit a solo home run in the eighth to get Miami to within 4-2, then the Hurricanes scored three times off losing pitcher Alex Cruz in the ninth to take the lead for good.
Tech (32-24, 12-18) lost Friday, then salvaged the final game of the series, winning 2-1 Saturday to clinch a spot in the ACC Tournament.
Before that, Farmer had eight strikeouts Thursday, giving him 104 in 93 2/3 innings pitched in 2012. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.36.
