The 14-and-under boys team at the Rockdale Tennis Center won its second consecutive ALTA city championship recently.
The final, against Legacy Park at the DeKalb Tennis Center, came down to a match tie-breaker at No. 1 doubles after the teams split the first 52 points, 26-26. The RTC doubles team of Brandon Wilson and T.J. Wilson went through a seven-point tiebreaker, and fell behind 4-3 before rallying to win 7-4 to secure the championship.
The teams split the first four matches as Logan Hull won 8-1 at No. 1 singles, Casey Arrington lost 8-2 at No. 2 singles and Chandler Williams and Ethan Cheng dropped an 8-6 match at No. 2 doubles. The No. 1 doubles team was tied 7-7 before winning 9-7, which evened the match at 2-2 and forced the tiebreaker.
"It was very nerve-wracking just knowing what's got to be going on in their little heads. The boys were ecstatic, it was raining, and all the kids stormed the court, and the parents were all a bundle of nerves," coach Randall Wilson said. "Because at ALTA (matches) there's no cheering during the match, we all had to sit up there in silence."
Other team members were Nick Bouchillon, Kanaan Mills and Lawson Van Ness.
"I think all of the parents were so proud of how well all the boys played as a team all season," Randall Wilson said. "We had six different players play singles this season and everyone played doubles at some point this season. It was a true team effort."
