Newton students get laptops

COVINGTON Recently 13 Newton County high school students were awarded laptop computers for winning the state High School High Tech Computer Competition.

The students wrote essays or created PowerPoint presentations about how a laptop computer would help them transition after high school.

Students who won laptops are Alcovy High School's Kayla Terry and Chyan Oudkerk; Eastside High School's Avery James, Matthew Feld, Ryan Norrington, Robin Colley, Sam Marks, Kaitlyn Burnham, Derek Williams and Kyle Edwards; and Newton High School's Tashawna Sims, April Brooks and James Whitaker.

The entire Newton County High School High Tech program attended the awards banquet at El Charro, where students were given certificates for participation in the various High School High Tech activities from the past school year.

This school year, High School High Tech students were able to attend an industry tour of Beaver Manufacturing followed by lunch at Burrito Loco. High School High Tech students were also able to job shadow at several local businesses.

Newton County parents, teachers and administrators also came out to support the High School High Tech students and the program.

Program coordinators are Chris Newsham from Alcovy High School, Alisa Echols from Eastside High School and Tyshema Mitchell from Newton High School.
