Wilkins new AD at Salem

— The athletics department at Salem High School is going through some big changes. Maurice Gibson is stepping down as athletic director and former boy’s basketball coach Darren Wilkins will take over the position starting with the 2012-2013 school year, Wilkins confirmed Wednesday.

While Wilkins moves into the athletic director’s spot after eight years as boy’s coach, his former assistant, Noah Harrell will take over as boy’s head man this winter.

“The process began a while back, I think coach (Gibson) is just going to pursue some other interests,” Wilkins said. “It was one of those things if I was interested (and) I put my name in the hat, through the process I guess I came out the winner. To be able to move into that position I had to give up the basketball job.”

Wilkins took Salem to the state playoffs in each of his last two seasons as coach, which is the only two times the program has advanced to the state tournament.

Harrell, who also coaches the boy’s golf team, was an assistant for four seasons under Wilkins.

“He’s somebody that knows the kids, he knows the things that we’ve been trying to accomplish here,” Wilkins said of Harrell. “We’ve come off three pretty good years, he’s somebody that can keep what we’ve got going. He’s a young energetic mind, he’ll continue doing good things.”
