May designated "Bike Month" in Covington

COVINGTON -- Mayor Ronnie Johnston has proclaimed May as "Bike Month" in Covington, according to a press release issued by Maurice Carter, chairman of Newton Trails and past president of the Covington Conyers Cycling Club (C4).

The celebration of Bike Month was established by the League of American Bicyclists in 1956.

Covington and Newton County have long been popular with Southeastern bicyclists as evidenced by the hosting of regular and special bicycle events, Carter pointed out, listing such events as the Covington Century Bike Ride, the Georgia Cycling Gran Prix, the Healthy Newton Omnium, Bicycle Ride Across Georgia, the Georgia Tandem Rally and the popular Covington Community Bike Ride.

The Covington Community Bike Ride started in May 2009 as an event co-sponsored by the Covington Conyers Cycling Club (C4), the Tourism Division of the Covington Newton County Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Covington, Carter said. Shortly thereafter, Newton Trails joined as a co-sponsor. The ride starts from the Covington Square at 3 p.m. the first Sunday of every month year-round.

"I said from the start I would show up as long as at least one other rider would show," said Carter said. "So far, we're at 36 months and counting. What makes the ride special is the relaxed pace and family-friendly atmosphere. It's a 'Sunday Drive' on two wheels. We're all about fun for adults of all ages, families, children and casual cyclists looking for a pleasant spin around town with good company."

I have no problem with cyclist in the county. The problem that I have is when they fail to follow the rules of the road and then blame it on the motorists. I was under the impression that cyclist also have to follow all laws, such as stopping at stop signs.
