Rachel Cuffy had an outstanding senior season for the Rockdale track and field team, and it got a little better recently. Cuffy, who at the Class AAAA state track and field meet in Albany finished third in the 200 meters (24.68), and fourth in both the long jump (17-11) and 100 meters (12.01), signed an athletic scholarship with Cowley Community College (Kansas).
Rockdale coach DeMarquis Terry said he expects Cuffy to sign with a Division I school after her two years at Cowley.
"She will accomplish great things at the next level and will sign with a Division I institution in two years," Terry said. "Rachel Cuffy is ... a rare athlete and will do great at Cowley. I think getting her to a new environment was the best fit for her going forward with her career."
Last Thursday, Cuffy joined teammate Kree Clark (Jacksonville University) in signing track scholarships.
"The thing that people don't realize is that these girls are great people, very coachable and they just grow on you," Terry said of Cuffy and Clark. "That's what I think the college coaches like about them."
Cowley, based in Arkansas City, Kansas, had won five straight Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division outdoor track and field titles before placing third in 2012.
