COVINGTON -- The Newton County School System recently announced that Dr. Renee Mallard, principal of Indian Creek Middle School, was awarded the Georgia State University Principals Center's Joe Richardson Award for the 2011-2012 school year.
The award is given each year to a principal who has distinguished himself or herself in leading a school that works for all students.
It is named after Dr. Joe Richardson, founder of the Principals Center at Georgia State University, former associate dean of the College of Education at Georgia State University, and former headmaster of Galloway School.
As recipient of the award, Mallard will be recognized at the Principals Center's New Principals Celebration at the Carter Center this month.
"Being chosen as the recipient ... is an honor," Mallard said. "To be recognized and celebrated as a learning leader and as someone who provides a motivating learning environment for everyone is one of the highest compliments a principal can receive."
She said she is humbled by the selection.
"It has always been my goal to ensure that students receive the best education and the best opportunities we can provide, while maintaining a positive environment for both students and staff," she said. "I am passionate about learning and I hope to always set an example."
She said being recognized by the school board made it even more special.
"Renee is most deserving," said NCSS Superintendent Gary Mathews. "And she is the first to say that such recognition is more her staff than her."
