CONOVER, N.C. -- Former Eastside golfer Taylor Smith showed that he could handle the pressure as he carded a 5-under par in the three day tournament to help give the Bobcats the NCAA South/Southeast region championship at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa Jones Course.
The No. 21 ranked DII Georgia College golf team punched their ticket to the NCAA Finals on Wednesday at the Cardinal Club in Louisville, Ky. The finals run from May 15-19.
Georgia College put up a 289 on the final day, added to rounds of 291 and 289 for five-over par on the par-72 course giving them a one-stroke win over No. 2 ranked Barry University.
Smith, a junior, shot a team-best 70 in the final round and finished with a team-best after firing previous rounds of 69 and 72. Smith missed a playoff for individual medalist honors by one stroke shooting five birdies in final round action on Wednesday.
Classmate Patrick Garrett (Kennesaw) finished the tournament at 3-under par shooting a 71-70-72 birdieing four straight holes in the final round today.
Freshman Ryan Trocchio (Norcross) saved his best round for last firing par after posting a 74 and 75 for 5-over par to finish in 28th place. Trocchio birdied the 13th and 15th, both holes he bogeyed on Tuesday.
David Sullivan (Woodstock) come in at 10-over with rounds of 77, 74 and 75. Sullivan finally figured out the last hole after a triple and double-bogey the first two days by recording a birdie in the final round.
Sophomore Victor Monte (Chantilly, Va.) was 12-over par with rounds of 80-73-75.
Georgia College and Barry will be joined by No. 1 Nova Southeastern University, No. 4 UNC Pembroke and No. 14 USC Aiken as the five squads advance to the NCAA Final in Louisville, Ky.
The Bobcats have won the Regional title just once before, in 2008. This will mark their ninth appearance in the NCAA Finals and the first since 2009.
